I do not know if this is extremely common, but I was impressed when I first heard about it. Talkshoe.com will now place an audio ad for your business in someone else's podcast. I do know what the fee for this is or how it works, exactly. But, I think this is great if you can get news of your business or service on a podcast that is somehow related to your business. Is this really pretty common in the podcasting community?

Any time I can 'piggyback' on someone else' promotion .... If we're compatible ... Count me in!

Of course I'm expected to return the favour.

The big plus is that you're reaching a whole pile of folks who didn't know you existed. (Just don't overdo it!   This is a wonderful opportunity to commence relationships).

Recently Joe sent me a personally addressed email telling me about his new Klunky 1 hr video.

Over the next few days;   I received a few more personally addressed communications from Joe's colleagues all rhapsodizing about specific areas of Joe's video and designed to make me thirsty.

Bottom line ...... Joe got a heck of a lot of powerful promotion and I was nudged into taking a look at this.

Co-operating in "some-one else' " podcast is basically an OK idea but I'd need to be able to specify who's 'cast I'm on.

BTW .... Joe gave us lots of valuable strategies in his vid and only towards the end did he mention his limited seating seminar. (100 seats x $997 = $100,000 for the weekend).

How much of that came from the recommendations of Joe's pal's to view the movie?    No idea!    Do you think this extra validation helped Joe put 'bums in seats'?

Are you seeking other merchants to collaborate with?      If not now;   When?

BTW No2. I've just posted "Elements of a productive video" In my blog.    If you're a subscriber;   Add a constructive comment and get yourself some publicity.

Bestest.

Lamar, I'm a member of the Tech Podcasts Network (http://www.techpodcasts.com) and our members regularly exchange promos for our podcasts/businesses. Since we're a technology related community, then we share a listener base of folks who are already interested in technology, so we have a better chance of hitting our target market. My show is also on Blog Talk Radio (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/viewsfromthecoop) and I have noticed that many of the shows mention other shows and have exchanged "appearances" with other podcasters there. Yes, I think podcasters do a very good job of promoting each other with promos, interviews and ads. Has anybody else had a similar experience?

Paige,

This is fascinating. Podcasters promoting other podcasters by including ads in podcasts for programs other than their own. Make no mistake, that is a unique collaboration.

On another thread on this network it was announced that ads for podcasting events in a publication related to USA Today were not working as well as expected. I wonder why? I would assume that USA Today reaches a much larger audience than any one podcast. Is there an inherent problem between establishing a real connection by reading an ad about a podcast in a print publication and actually following through online? Put another way, it is better to read an announcement about a podcast online or hear it online in a podcast ad than it is to read about it in a print publication? I am not asking this question because I know the answer. I do not know the answer.

There is a Web 2.0 service called Squidoo.com. You can not only announce podcasts there in lenses you create, you can link RSS feeds from actual podcasts there as well. You can even link the Squidoo lens where the podcast(s) are showcased to Squidoo groups to further expand your audience exposure. Plus, on Talkshoe.com your interactive podcasts can automatically get placed in the iTunes Music Store's Podcast Directory. But, here's an important question. Does any of this extra effort really make any difference? If you would like to see an example of what I am talking about click here.

This is just my own personal opionion, Lamar, but I believe podcasting is still very much a niche market. Yes, it's grown tremendously but I still don't think it's quite mainstream enough for USA Today readers. I don't know if the podcast ads were also on the USA Today website but if they were, I'd think those would have a better chance of attracting a new audience. Advertising for podcasts and within podcasts is reaching a bigger audience all the time, but I don't believe it's the medium most people turn to for news, information or entertainment.

As for print ads, I can only speak, once again, from personal experience. I'm much more likely to listen to a podcast when I hear about it online since it usually means all I have to do is click a link. Since most podcasters also blog their episodes, I can visit the blog after I've heard the podcast and find all the links to websites and other podcasts they've referenced during the show. I may be nowhere near a computer when I read about a podcast in a print publication and even if something sounds interesting, I've usually forgotten about it by the time I do have access.

I'm sure my experience doesn't reflect every other podcaster's either. What about the rest of you? What's your experience with podcast advertising?

Paige,

Here are some thing for you to consider:

1) You can send out a press release about a talk show. There was a Ryze network here dedicated to press release at one time. There are free PR online services. However, I do not know how effective these "free services" are.)

2) You can no doubt send out an invitation about a talk show via Blog Talk Radio to a mailing list.

3) You can advertise on other Blog Talk Radio programs a specific upcoming show or your program in general.

4) You could Twitter news about your podcast minutes before it was to start.

5) You could do a blog about the show - both before and after a particular program.

6) You could make a Squidoo lens about the program and provide RSS feeds to previous programs. As an example, see CDMM - Synergistic Business Marketing.

7) You could make a Squidoo site that promoted your show, use audio and video, and then connect that one lens to a myriad of other lens groups to further promote your show. As a example, see what a little Thai restaurant is attempting to accomplish at Ting's Thai Kitchen.

8) Thanks to FREE Wi-Fi hot spots and services like Orb.com, you could actually make your podcasts available to people 24/7 - even while they were in a restaurant waiting to be served their meal (provided they had a mobile device). For an example, click here.
