Anyone Have Info on iPhones using RSS?Views: 473

I am sorry I have been so slack. Developing and launching the Online Community Magazines software/business has eaten up all of my time (and money).

Has anyone here been following the iPhones features? Can you post an overview of what it will do, and if it allows subscriptions to RSS feeds? Can it download the attachments and play them? Can they play the streaming versions of the attachments?

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Penny,

Unfortunately, Apple has been VERY tight-lipped about the nitty-gritty details of the iPhone, except to their developers, who I assume have been sworn to secrecy lest they risk the wrath of Apple.

I've been picking up info on the iPhone here and there, and here are my best guesses.

First off, it should be able to sync with iTunes on your computer, the same way iPods and AppleTV do. So, if you use iTunes for your podcasts, you're probably set.

Secondly, there will be some third-party applications, which Apple will have some control over (because Apple likes doing that sort of thing). I doubt there will be any sort of third-party media software, since the iPhone will already be set up quite nicely and all the media software seems to be inseparable from the main OS.

Thirdly, my guess is that any third-party apps will be used through the built-in Safari internet browser. It's just a guess, though. It does provide some reason why Apple used up personnel and resources to build Safari for Windows at a time when Apple is probably already stretched to the limit. Perhaps iPhone users will use Safari on their PC or Mac to interact with the iPhone, the same way we use the iTunes software to interact with the iPod?

Plus, it seems to use many of the iPhone's features, you have to be connected to the internet, and thus using the cellular service provider's data plans. Thus making AT&T (and probably Apple) very wealthy.

The question is whether or not the iPhone can update its podcasts and other RSS feeds on its own, or can it only download them while syncing up to a computer?

Anyone here use Safari? Can it handle RSS feeds?

Just my thoughts,

Angelo

As a 'hardcore' mackie and somebody who is drooling over the iPhone I'd like to chime in. The Safari browser will support RSS feeds and my guess is that applies to the iPhone. Safari is an ok but not great browser and like most Mac Powerusers I'm on Firefox with more plug ins than makes common sense but its a geek thing. I do extensive podcasts (have since 2002) and plan on using the iPhone for that as well along with video casts.

As to applications - Apple has to make sure an application does not compromise the AT&T network. Imagine somebody writing an innocent looking app that would pull a Windows/Outlook virus thing and text message every AT&T user via viral robots. Ouch. I applaud their care and concern. Also, lets not forget that the iPhone is running on a full version of OSX and you can expect to see desktop quality aps (as well as robust web ones) tailored for it.

Should be an exciting time. My only personal concerns with the phone is their choice of push mail (Yahoo) and the QWERTY entry system seems awkward and not geared to thumbing but that will have to wait until some of us get actual hands on. Their are strong rumors that Google mail and possibly their full applications suite will be part of the launch.

Better late than never for a reply, I hope. While the iPhone uses the RSS-enabled Safari browser, it better functions as a video iPod with respect to listening to podcasts and is more likely to be used like the video iPods in regards to podcatching. My personal experience with my iPhone, and I suspect the tendency of most others that purchased one and listen to podcasts on it, is that I much prefer to get podcasts on my iPhone much like I did with my iPod... simply syncing the iPhone with the iTunes aggregator while it recharges and syncs to my computer every night.

So I don't actually download the podcasts directly on my iPhone using the AT&T network, it is still a bit impractical and syncing it to my computer hosting iTunes at work or home is more intuitive and pragmatic.

Speaking of iThis and iThat, I just secured the domain name iStudios.com and will be changing my creative services company name from Paradigm Lost Productions (www.paradigmlost.com) to iStudios (iStudios.com) in the weeks to come! I'm pretty stoked at the name change and my parent company ProAction Media (proactionmedia.com) will still be unchanged. See ya'll 'round the Podcasting community!
