What is the best way to promote a podcast? Or, perhaps that is not a fair question. There may be no ONE BEST WAY. But, what are some of the cost-effective options?

For example, is it a good idea to place a classified or display ad in a newspaper about a podcast? Or, is that simply throwing money down the drain.

There is a group here on Ryze that is engaged in a to-do-list board promotion. The board has room for just three more advertisers. Would the advertising of a podcast work on a to-do-list board? If you think it would, please do not just respond here, but also over on the ABHP Network. Here's the link - ABHP Network Post About To-Do-List Board.

I just did a show about this (that content is King, and PROMOTION is Queen - with "production" being a given). at
http://schoolofpodcasting.com/if-content-is-king-what-is-queen/

Here are a few of my tips.

1. Where are your potential listeners? Go there. This could be a physical place, or a forum online.
2. Have samples ready. So if you go to a physical location have some CDs ready to hand out.
3. Business cards that point people to your website are vert affordable and you can leave them everywhere. People keep business cards, and when you hand someone a flyer you are basically saying, "Here YOU throw this away." I saw this in action at a football game last Friday with some guy handing out flyers at the game. 15 feet from where he stood was a trash can full of flyers.
4. Find other podcasts like yours and see if you can swap promos, or interview each other on each other's shows.

The bottom line is this: putting your show in iTunes is not enough (but listing in directories would be number 5).

Dave,

I listened to your podcast. Very nice.

Are you familiar with Talkshoe.com? I understand they currently have a beta program where folks can call in on a direct line. No more passwords and show ID's required. You just pick up the phone and dial a phone number. Talkshoe is located in Pennsylvania. I live in Northern California. However, I have a Skype-In phone number. So, I can call into Talkshoe for free on a direct line. But, here the neat thing. Those who live in my area code can call my Skype-In line and the call can be forwarded to the Talkshoe direct line. All calls forwarded from my Skype-In phone number are also free.

How much does it cost to have a Talkshoe direct line? Right now, it's free because the service is in its beta stage. Are you aware of any other podcasting deals out there that are that good?
