When I first started out I spent an hour a week adding Heal Yourself Talk Radio's RSS feed to podcast and blog directories that fit my show.
After 2 1/2 years it pretty much runs itself now. Newer directories find my RSS feed from other directories and add them to their directories.
I know this from using Google Alerts to track where my keywords and terms for my show turn up, it is surprising many times to see all the places my Radio show turns up each week.

If you want top Google rankings, there is nothing that will get you there and keep you there more than a Podcast Directory based on your key words.
Google the term and you'll find the Directory: - Women's Health And Fitness - Women's Health And Fitness Podcast Directory - Health Podcast - Health Podcasting Directory - Small Business Podcast - Small Business Podcast Directory - Business Podcast - Business Resources Podcast Directory - Marketing Podcast - Marketing Podcast Directory - Family Friendly Podcasts - Family Friendly Podcast Directory
You let people submit their podcasts (and their blogs) for free that fit your niche. Your site will have continually changing content relevant to your key words, and therefore great Google rankings. You can advertise yourself at the top of the site for great online visibility, and you can even charge other non-competing businesses for inexpensive advertising on the site.
If a turnkey Podcast Directory site sounds like something that would be great for your online community or niche, go to http://www.PodcastDirectories4Sale.com.
If you say you are from Podcaster Central on Ryze, you will get a $250 discount on your Podcast Directory, and FREE HOSTING.

Where is your audience? Go there. I do a podcast for musicians, so I found out where the local "Jam nights" were and passed out CDs with example episodes (and directions on how to subscribe). I have a fitness show, I'm getting business cards made, and I could (wink) go to a store like Wal Mart and put a business card in every box of exercise equipment on their shelf. I've heard of people going to stores where their audience shops (say a craft store for a craft podcast ) and writing their URL in chalk on the sidewalk. These are all "Geurilla" methods. The point is to be relentless in your marketing. WHen paying at a restaurant, put a business card in with your tip. (Business cards are what a dime a piece). Make sure your friends and family have cards as well.

I never thought of those. I think a lot of people, including myself, forget about those offline opportunities to promote your podcast.
Creating a tangible (CD) version of what you do (as you said) is also another great way to market. Not everyone is familiar yet with downloading, and that is like a security blanket for some people.
